What's actually inside

Four specimens from the catalogue

Real pages from the packs, not stock mockups. The income tax and National Insurance working from the sole trader workspace, a project fee calculator from the creative contracts pack, a flexible working decision tree from the employment law kit, and the statutory anchors index from the AML and KYC pack.

The Sole Trader Tax Workspace computing a full Self Assessment from one income figure
From Pack 01 Sole Trader Tax Workspace Put in one income figure and the sheet returns the whole Self Assessment: income tax, Class 4 National Insurance, the effective rate, and the monthly amount to set aside, each mapped to the box it belongs in on the return.
The project fee calculator from the Creative Contracts Pack working out a quote
From Pack 02 Creative Contracts Pack A project fee calculator. Set the scope, the day rate and the complexity, and it returns a base, a suggested, a floor and a ceiling fee, so a quote stops being a guess.
The flexible working decision tree from the UK Employment Law Kit, five steps with the statutory grounds for refusal
From Pack 03 UK Employment Law Kit A flexible working decision tree. Five steps from the request to the decision, with the eight statutory grounds for refusal, so a reply stays inside the Acas Code.
The statutory anchors index from the AML and KYC Document Pack mapping each template to its regulation
From Pack 05 AML and KYC Document Pack A statutory anchors index. Every template mapped to the regulation it answers to, the MLR 2017 regulation and the POCA section, so an inspector can see the control behind each document.

Questions

Things people ask before they buy

Five answers, written by a UK sole trader, not a marketing team.

  1. Q1What happens when HMRC rates or statute changes?

You get the updated file. Free, by email, in the same order line as the original purchase. April rate changes, mid-year case law, new Acas Code wording, all included. The packs are built so the figures live in named cells, not in body text, so an update is a re-export, not a rewrite.

  2. Q2How do I know the documents are actually right?

Every pack cites the UK legislation and the named case law it rests on in the footnotes, dated to the tax year, so you don't have to take my word for it. Each figure traces back to the gov.uk or HMRC source it came from, and you can check the working yourself before you ever rely on it.

  3. Q3Will these hold up in an inspection or a dispute?

Each pack is built to the rules it answers to, the MLR 2017 for AML, the Renters' Rights Act 2025 for landlords, the Acas Code for employment, and written to be inspection ready. They're thorough, structured templates, not legal advice, so if you're in a live dispute with real money on it, take the document to a solicitor. For the everyday compliance most independents actually face, it's the file you'd otherwise pay an advisor far more to produce.

  4. Q4What is the refund policy?

Thirty days, no question. Reply to the receipt with the word "refund" and the original purchase is reversed inside the week. You keep the files; we are not in the business of policing whether you used them in the meantime.

  5. Q5Who are these built for?

UK independents who handle their own admin. Sole traders, freelancers, micro-employers, private landlords, small letting and estate agents under HMRC AML supervision. If you're running a business on small margins and the SaaS bills are eating the margin, the packs are written for you. If you have a finance team and an accountant already, the packs probably duplicate their work.

Why this exists

Hi :) I'm James Thom, a sole trader, and I built ExternalOS because I kept hitting the same wall. Whenever a compliance question came up, the only answers online were a monthly subscription priced for a firm with ten staff, or an advisor charging two hundred pounds an hour for a conversation I didn't really need. Nobody sold the thing itself, the spreadsheet that does the maths, the template with the statute already in it.

So I wrote them. It took about six months to get the five packs to a standard I'm happy to put my name on, each one citing the UK legislation and the case law it rests on in the footnotes, so you can check the working yourself. You pay once and the file is yours. If you find a mistake, or a rate I haven't updated yet, email me and the correction, or a full refund, comes back in the same thread as your receipt. We offer free tools also, any feedback would be appreciated!

Questions, corrections, a statute citation I missed: hello@externalos.com.

The boring admin, done.
